Experience the charm of Samulnori!
Samulunori is a traditional Korean percussion music style that attracts many people. This musical style is played using four different percussion instruments - chango, puk, kengari, and jin - each with its own role in creating a harmonious rhythm. The name samulunori means "four things (sam) played (nori)," and the dynamic sound and energetic performance of these four instruments are the hallmarks of this style.
Even those new to this music will be captivated by its powerful performance and intricately intertwined rhythms. Especially when experiencing samulunori live, every moment is fresh and creates a sense of oneness with the audience. The sense of presence and tension that can only be experienced on the spot is unforgettable once experienced.
Samulunori is also deeply connected to Korean culture and historical background, and each percussion instrument has its own symbolic meaning in the natural world and human society. For example, the chango expresses natural phenomena such as rain and wind, and is closely connected to people's daily lives. This rich cultural background will further deepen your understanding and interest in the subject.
By actually experiencing it as a participant, you can feel its appeal for yourself. In the beginner's class, you can start with basic beats and experience the fun and sense of accomplishment of beating the beat yourself. Most importantly, this experience will nurture your ability to communicate and cooperate with others. We hope that you will take this opportunity to enter the world of samulunori and experience its profound appeal for yourself!

Learn the rhythm of traditional Korean music
The Samulnori Experience Class is a great way to learn the rhythms of traditional Korean music. This class is designed to develop a sense of rhythm, the foundation of music, using traditional Korean percussion instruments. Samulunori is played using four main percussion instruments - changgo (long drum), puk (drum), kengari (small gong), and jin (large gong) - each with its own unique tone and role.
To begin with, participants will learn about these instruments. Each instrument requires different characteristics and playing techniques, and understanding them provides a deeper playing experience. For example, the chango requires a high degree of hand-foot coordination, as both hands strike different rhythmic patterns. On the other hand, puku, with its loud and powerful beat, provides a steady tempo for the entire group.
The class starts with basic beats and gradually progresses to more complex rhythmic patterns. The instructors are professionals with a wealth of experience, and their diverse teaching methods ensure that each participant can learn at a pace that suits him or her. This means that even beginners can participate with confidence and improve their skills at their own pace.
The class also provides many opportunities to actually perform in an ensemble format. Cooperation and communication with other participants gives a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment that cannot be experienced alone. Especially in ensembles with multiple players, students can enjoy dynamic and united performances while keeping in tune with each other.
In this way, the Samulunori experience class is not just about acquiring skills, but also about feeling the energy and passion unique to traditional Korean music. Along with an interesting cultural background, you will also gain a deeper understanding of the music from a new perspective, so please take this opportunity to give it a try.
Participant's voice: The fun I felt at Samulunori
We have received many pleasant comments from those who participated in the Samulunori hands-on class. Many of them were experiencing a traditional Korean percussion instrument for the first time, but they were completely drawn in by its charm.
One of the participants, Mr. Tanaka, said, "At first I thought it would be difficult, but when I actually tried it, I found it fun to feel the rhythm. Especially when I played the django drum, I felt as if I myself became a part of the music, which was very exhilarating. Mr. Suzuki added, "I have always loved music, but I was not comfortable playing it by myself. But at this class, which was geared toward beginners and taught carefully, I was able to enjoy it with peace of mind.
Mr. Sato and his son, who participated in the program with their elementary school child, also expressed their satisfaction, saying, "Since this was a program that both parents and children could experience together, they were able to strengthen their bond through the rhythms together. The children seemed to have gained a new perspective by being exposed to a different culture and music than usual.
As these comments indicate, the Samulunori Experience Class is not just about learning music, but also about providing a valuable time of sincere enjoyment. Once you start playing on the spot, the unique rhythm and resonance of the music will naturally bring a smile to your face and give you a fresh sensation that you cannot experience in everyday life.
We would like to invite those who are interested in learning more about the next event to join us. Why not take this opportunity to enjoy the charm of Samulunori to the fullest and adopt it as a new hobby? We look forward to seeing you there.
