In December in the Yaeyama Islands, the weather is often chilly, with a heavy cloud cover and poor weather.

However, some days are warm enough to wear short sleeves during the day.

However, even on warm days, it becomes chilly after sunset, so you will need a cardigan or other long-sleeved garment.

In the Yaeyama area, the “sea opening” is held in mid-March every year. This is the earliest sea opening in Japan.

From mid to late March, the appearance of Yaeyama fireflies reaches its peak.

They are only found in the Yaeyama region and are the smallest fireflies in Japan.

야에야마 제도란, 일본의 인기 관광지인 오키나와현 이시가키섬을 중심으로 이리오모테섬, 다케토미섬 등의 유인도와 많은 무인도로 이루어진 섬들을 말해요.

‘아열대 해양성 기후’에 속해 일년 내내 일교차가 크지 않아 비교적 살기가 좋은 지역이죠.

야에야마 제도의 12월은 먹구름이 끼고 흐린 날과 쌀쌀한 날이 많아지지만,

낮에는 반팔을 입어도 될 정도로 따뜻해지는 날도 있어요.

단, 따뜻한 날이라도 해가 지면 쌀쌀해지니 ‘긴팔’ 겉옷은 꼭 챙겨 가세요.

야에야마 제도의 2월은 날씨가 좋지 않은 날이 많지만, 2월 하순에 접어들면 북풍이 약해져 점점 ‘봄’을 느낄 수 있게 돼요.

다만 날씨가 안정적이지 않아 ‘갑작스러운 스콜’이나 ‘비’가 내리는 날도 많기 때문에 ‘우비’는 필수예요.

겨울이지만 봄으로 향하는 계절의 변화를 느낄 수 있는 시기로,

오키나와의 벚꽃인 ‘간히자쿠라(寒緋桜)’가 만개하는 계절이니 한발 앞서 ‘꽃놀이’를 즐길 수 있어요.

3월의 야에야마 제도의 기후|비교적 따뜻한 날이 많아져요

‘야에야마 제도’에서는 3월이 되면 남풍이 불기 시작하면서 낮에는 20℃를 웃도는 날이 많아지고,

비오는 날도 줄어들어요.

다만, 아직 기후가 안정적이지 않아 1~2주 간격으로 날씨가 변하고, 북풍이 불어 비가 올 수도 있기 때문에 관광할 때에는 추운 날과 따뜻한 날에 입을 수 있는 옷들을 준비해 가는 게 좋을 거예요.

따뜻한 날은 여름처럼 ‘반팔 반바지’로 지낼 수 있고 햇볕도 강해지는데요,

추운 날에는 ‘우비’나 ‘긴 소매의 겉옷’이 필요해요.

야에야마 지방에서는 매년 3월 중순에 ‘우미비라키(해수욕장 첫 개장날)’가 있는데, 이는 일본에서 가장 이른 시기의 개장이라고 해요.

하지만 아직 수온이 낮아 바다에 들어가기에는 추워서, 장시간 입수할 경우 ‘웨트 슈트’을 착용하시길 추천드려요.

3월 중순부터 하순까지는 ‘야에야마히메보타루’가 가장 많이 나타나는 시기인데요,

‘야에야마히메보타루’는 야에야마 지방에만 서식하는 ‘일본에서 가장 작은 반딧불이’예요.

오키나와 곳곳에 서식하는 ‘겟토(月桃)'(위 사진)는 빠르면 4월 하순경부터 꽃을 피워요.

‘야에야마 제도’는 4월 말~5월 초 일본의 대형 연휴인 ‘골든위크’가 끝난 시기 즈음부터 비와 흐린 날씨가 많아지는 ‘장마’가 시작돼요.

다만, 일본 본토의 장마철과 달리 비가 계속 내리는 것이 아니라 스콜처럼 펑펑 쏟아지다가도 금방 하늘이 맑아지죠.

비 오는 날도 많지만, 날씨가 맑아지면 기온은 확 올라가요.

태풍 시즌은 아니지만 드물게 태풍이 오는 해도 있어서, 태풍을 피하고 싶다면 4월 이전에 방문하는 게 좋을 거예요.

5월에는 반팔 반바지에 샌들처럼 시원한 옷차림이 좋아요. 강한 자외선에도 대비해 주세요.

야에야마 제도의 12월~5월, 기온 변화에 주의하세요!

이처럼 오키나와현 ‘야에야마 제도’는 사계절 내내 따뜻할 것 같은 이미지와는 달리, 겨울에는 정말 추워지니 방심하고 얇게 입고 갔다간 후회할수도 있어요.
