Miyako-jima is the largest and the most populous island among the eight Miyako Islands.
Miyako-jima is a low, coral island that doesn’t have any mountains or rivers. Because of this, virtually no sediments enter the waters, making the surrounding ocean incredibly transparent and blue, sometimes referred to as “Miyako blue”.
What makes this island so special, you say?
In this article, I will introduce top 3 locations & a local celebrity that makes this island truly unique.
1. Yonaha Maehama Beach | The most beautiful beach in the East
Yonaha Maehama Beach is the most famous beach in Miyako-jima, or maybe even for Okinawa as a whole. The bright white sands and cobalt blue sea is commonly referred to as “the most beautiful beach in the East.” Known locally as “Maipama beach”, this is a beloved spot for many.
The sand is powdery, and almost pure white. It feels really good to your feet, so having a walk along the coast makes a blissful experience. The coastline extends about 7km, so you may walk all you like.
The bridge that can be seen from afar is the Kurima Bridge, bridging Miyako-jima and Kurima-jima. The bridge is crossable by foot, so you can view the beach from atop the bridge.

2. Sunayama Beach | The incredible, naturally made stone arch
Sunayama (砂山 lit. “sand-hill”) beach is located in the northern part of Miyako-jima, about 4km away from the city center, making this a very accessible beach.
As the name suggests, you have to pass through a sandy hill in order to get to the beach. This path is harder to cross than it looks, but the coming scenery is well worth the effort.
There is one particular reason why this beach is famous: the arched boulder. This boulder was created by continuous erosion caused by waves over countless years. It is truly a marvel of nature.
Unfortunately, getting close to the boulder is currently off-limits due to falling rocks and collapses, so please be sure to keep a safe distance.

Higashi Hennazaki is the name for the easternmost cape in Miyako-jima. On the top of cape, there is a lighthouse that can be entered & climbed freely by the public. By the way, there are 16 lighthouses that are publicly open in Japan, and this would be the southernmost one.
The scenery viewed from atop the lighthouse is stunning. The coastline of Miyako-jima, the blue sea, and the boulders off shore… a panoramic view of a lifetime can be seen here.
The boulders off the shore are said to be the aftermath of an enormous tsunami that happened in 1771. It is definitely a unique but beautiful feature of this sea.

4. Miyako-jima Mamoru-kun | The guardian of Miyako-jima’s traffic
By far the most famous and beloved character that has originated from Miyako-jima is Miyako-jima Mamoru-kun.
Mamoru-kun is the guardian of traffic, often seen on roadsides in densely trafficked areas (“まもる=mamoru” in Japanese means “to protect,” as well as it being a popular boy’s name). Currently, there are about 20 Mamoru-kuns scattered around the island, and they each have their own unique name. They are described as being brothers, except one girl named Maruko.
Each Mamoru-kuns have their distinctive style, which adds to their charm.
Driving around Miyako-jima looking for all the different Mamoru-kuns can make a great activity in itself. Remember, however, that Mamoru-kuns are the overlookers of traffic, so be sure to take necessary safety precautions when taking pictures.

미야코섬에서, 또 오키나와에서 가장 유명하다고 할 수 있는 해변이 바로 요나하 마에하마 비치(与那覇前浜ビーチ)예요. 백사장과 코발트블루의 아름다운 바다가 펼쳐지는 동양에서 가장 아름답다고도 하는 해변으로, 현지에서는 ‘마이파마 비치’라는 이름으로 불리며 사랑받고 있어요.
해변의 모래는 새하얗고 고운 파우더 샌드로, 맨발로 걷는 감촉이 기분 좋아서 산책하면 황홀한 시간을 보낼 수 있을 거예요. 해변의 길이가 7km에 달하니 질릴 때까지 계속 걸어보는 것도 좋겠네요.
바다 너머로 보이는 커다란 다리는 구리마대교로, 미야코 섬과 쿠리마섬을 연결하는 다리예요. 걸어서 건널 수 있어서 다리 위에서도 요나하 마에하마 비치를 내려다볼 수 있죠.

2. 스나야마 비치｜오랜 세월이 만들어낸 천연 암석의 아치
미야코섬 북쪽의 스나야마 비치는 시가지에서 고작 4km 떨어진 곳으로 접근성이 뛰어난 해변이에요.
스나야마(모래산)라는 이름 그대로, 봉긋한 모래산 길을 따라가다 보면 해변에 도착해요. 이 길은 의외로 걷기가 험난하지만, 그 끝에 다다르는 순간 피로가 싹 가실 정도의 아름다운 해변을 볼 수 있죠.
스나야마 비치가 유명한 데에는 이유가 있는데요, 바로 해변의 경관을 아름답게 연출하는 아치형 천연 바위가 있기 때문이에요. 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 파도의 침식작용으로 만들어진 바위로, 자연의 위대함을 느낄 수 있어요.
안타깝게도 현재는 낙석과 붕괴의 위험이 있어 이 천연 바위 근방은 출입이 금지되어 있으니, 안전을 위해서 들어가지 않도록 주의해 주세요.

3. 히가시헨나 곶｜일본 최남단, 올라갈 수 있는 등대
히가시헨나 곶은 미야코섬 최동단에 있는 곶으로, 그 끝에 세워진 등대에 올라갈 수 있어요. 참고로 일본에서 올라가볼 수 있는 등대는 16기인데, 그중에서도 최남단에 있는 등대예요.
등대 위에서 내려다보는 경치는 그야말로 압권이에요. 미야코섬의 해안선, 푸른 바다, 여기저기 흩어진 큰 바위들. 눈앞에 아름답게 펼쳐지는 파노라마 뷰를 볼 수 있어요.
이 수많은 바위들은 1771년 대지진 당시 쓰나미로 떠밀려온 것이라고 해요. 신기한 광경이지만 독특한 아름다움을 자아내고 있어요.

4. 미야코지마 마모루 군｜미야코섬의 교통 안전을 위해 밤낮없이 일해요
미야코섬에서 가장 유명한 캐릭터는 미야코지마 마모루 군이 아닐까 해요.
마모루 군은 미야코섬의 교통 안전을 지키기 위해 교통량이 많은 교차로를 중심으로 근무하고 있어요. 현재 미야코섬 각지에 총 20개가 설치되어 있고, 각각에는 이름이 붙여져 있어요. 모두 형제라는 설정으로, 한 명뿐인 여자아이의 이름은 미야코지마 마루코예요.
수작업으로 페인트를 칠하기 때문에 얼굴마다 완성된 모습과 표정이 다른 것도 인기의 비결일지도 모르겠네요.
